Headache upon waking: causes, when to be concerned, and its connection to your vision

What is it?

Waking up with a headache is more common than you might think. Many people start their day with a feeling of pressure in their forehead, at their temples, or even behind their eyes, without really knowing why. While in most cases it is not a serious issue, it can be a sign that something in your body is not functioning as it should—ranging from inadequate rest to undiagnosed vision problems. In fact, headaches upon waking can have various causes, such as sleep disorders, muscle tension, or even vision-related issues. Identifying the root cause is key to finding a solution and improving your quality of life. In this article, we explain why this type of headache occurs, when you should be concerned, and the role that vision health plays in all of this.

Why do I have a headache when I wake up?

Morning headaches can stem from various factors, and often, it is a combination of several that triggers them.
  • Sleep issues:

Poor sleep is one of the most common causes. Insomnia, waking up during the night, or low-quality sleep can disrupt the body’s rhythms and lead to headaches upon waking. Sleep apnea—a disorder in which breathing is interrupted during the night—also plays a role, as it reduces the oxygen supply to the brain and contributes to morning pain.

  • Bruxism (teeth grinding):

Many people clench their jaw while they sleep without realizing it. This muscle tension can cause pain that radiates to the head by the time they wake up.

  • Sleeping posture:

Sleeping in an improper position or using an unsuitable pillow can lead to cervical (neck) tension, one of the most frequent causes of morning headaches.

  • Dehydration:

The body continues to function throughout the night, losing fluids in the process. If you are not well-hydrated, you may wake up with a mild headache or a feeling of heaviness.

  • Stress and anxiety:

Accumulated stress directly affects the quality of your rest. Furthermore, it can trigger tension headaches, which often manifest upon waking.

Could it be related to vision?

Yes, a headache upon waking can also have a visual origin—one that often goes unnoticed.
  • Uncorrected refractive errors:

Vision defects such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism can lead to constant eye strain. This creates tension that often manifests as a headache, even as you start your day.

  • Digital eye strain:

We live surrounded by screens. If you spent many hours the previous day in front of a mobile phone, tablet, or computer, your eyes may not fully recover overnight. This leads to what is known as eye strain (or digital eye strain), with symptoms including:

    • Headaches
    • A sensation of pressure in the eyes
    • Blurred vision
    • Eye fatigue
  • Accommodative strain:

From the age of 40, the eye begins to lose its ability to focus on near objects (presbyopia). This forces the eyes to exert constant effort, especially when using a mobile phone.

This extra strain can trigger headaches that may even be present upon waking, particularly if there was a heavy visual load the day before.

  • Dry eye:

Tear production decreases during the night, which can lead to dry eyes. This discomfort may be accompanied by a headache or a general feeling of unease upon waking.

When should you be concerned, and what should you do?

Although a headache upon waking is usually benign, there are situations in which it is advisable to see a specialist.
Warning signs
Consult a professional if:
  • The pain is frequent or occurs daily.
  • It is very intense or incapacitating.
  • It is accompanied by blurred vision or eye discomfort.
  • You regularly need to take painkillers.
  • It interferes with your daily routine.

What can you do to prevent it?

Here are some practical recommendations:
  • Improve your rest: Maintain a regular sleep schedule. Avoid screens before bedtime. Pay attention to your posture and your pillow.
  • Stay properly hydrated. Drinking enough water throughout the day helps prevent morning headaches.
  • Reduce stress. Practicing relaxation techniques can make a real difference.
  • Take care of your eye health. Have your vision checked. Give your eyes a rest (using the 20-20-20 rule). Avoid excessive screen use.

The importance of an eye examination

Many people live with vision problems without even realizing it. A simple refractive error or the onset of presbyopia could be the underlying cause of those headaches you experience every morning.
Detecting these issues early not only improves your vision but also enhances your overall well-being.
Waking up with a headache should not be ignored, especially if it happens frequently. While often linked to sleep quality or lifestyle, in some cases, it may be a sign that your vision requires attention. Listening to your body is key. If, in addition to the pain, you find it difficult to focus, struggle with reading, or experience eye strain, your eyes are likely signaling that they need some form of correction. If you have any concerns, you should consult an eye care specialist.
