What is it?
In ophthalmology, these reddish spots that appear on the eyes are known as subconjunctival hemorrhages. This condition involves minor ruptures in some of the blood vessels or capillaries located within the eye’s conjunctiva; as a result, a small amount of blood becomes trapped between the conjunctiva and the sclera (the white part of the eye).
It is therefore important to define what the conjunctiva is. It is a thin, transparent, strong, and elastic membrane that covers the sclera—the white part of the eye. Among its primary functions are protecting the eyes and providing sufficient lubrication to the cornea.
Causes
There are multiple factors that can cause an eye hemorrhage—or subconjunctival hemorrhage—which are also impossible to prevent. These are primarily triggered by:
- Violent sneezing
- Fits of coughing
- Rubbing the eyes vigorously
How do we treat her?
In most cases, the red spots caused by this type of bleeding or hemorrhage will disappear within a period ranging from at least 8 days to a maximum of one month, depending on the severity; the use of artificial tears is recommended.
However, if these spots appear frequently, it is important to consult an ophthalmologist and have your blood pressure checked and monitored.
