Eight tips for preventing ear infections in summer

84% of outer ear infections occur in the summer. Water accumulating in the ears while swimming at the beach or in pools, combined with the heat, contributes to their development. Young children are the most vulnerable; but what can we do to prevent them?
It is time to enjoy beaches, swimming pools, and rivers, and it is hard to stop little ones from wanting to spend hours in the water. However, we must keep in mind that water accumulating in their ears, combined with the heat, can lead to infections—which, because their Eustachian tubes are shorter, can easily spread to the middle ear. Furthermore, children under the age of three have an immune system that is still developing. While we should always be mindful of water quality—as it can play a significant role in the development of an ear infection—sometimes bacteria are already present in the ear and begin to thrive when the right conditions arise, namely heat and moisture.

Can otitis be prevented?

Taking care of your ears is essential. Here are eight tips to help you prevent ear infections (otitis) this summer:
  • It is important to keep the outer part of the ear dry, especially the opening of the ear canal.
  • While we know that diving underwater is fun, it is best to limit the time spent submerged and avoid getting water in the ears as much as possible.
  • After swimming, be sure to dry the outer part of the ear—but do NOT use cotton swabs to do so.
  • To help drain water from the ears, you can tilt your head from side to side for a few seconds.
  • Avoid swimming in water that may be contaminated.
  • If water remains trapped in the ear canal, you can use a few drops of boric acid solution (available at pharmacies).
  • If you are prone to developing earwax or keratin plugs, visit an ENT specialist for a professional cleaning before your vacation.

Symptoms indicating the need to go to the emergency room

If, despite all measures, an ear infection (otitis) develops, seek emergency medical attention if:
  • Severe pain occurs or lasts for more than two hours.
  • There is neck stiffness, drowsiness, or complaints of a headache.
  • The person is unable to walk.
  • Vertigo and nausea occur.
